Allow your dog to experience the world on his/her own terms

Training Environment
Sniffaris can be done just about anywhere, but for shy dogs I like to take them hiking in the woods. I find getting into nature can be very soothing for a dog. They will enjoy exploring and often will forget about the things that make them nervous.
Recommended Treat Position
You may not need treats, but I have them on hand just in case. If something gets difficult for your dog you can use them to redirect. Consider scattering the treats around in the grass to give him/her a fun game seeking them out. This foraging behavior is a natural and enjoyable one for dogs.
If your dog decides to walk nicely by your side in heel position, feel free to reward this behavior, but it’s not a requirement!
Steps
Leash up your dog and walk.
If your dog wants to stop and sniff, stop and wait until your dog is ready to move forward. This is your dog’s walk, not yours.
Let your dog’s nose lead you as much as possible. Allow him/her to explore the environment.
Homework
Go out and have fun as often as you can. Try to take your dog on sniffaris at least three times a week. Once a day is great, but we all have lives we have to pay attention to, so do this as often as you can.
